And a monthly article to inspire you to create a career and life you love

Kate James

In my mid-thirties, I had a mini career crisis. While I had a job that I liked (working as business manager for a film business), I knew it wasn’t my calling. I had been meditating for eight years and the pull towards a role where I could help people had become stronger. I had a deep sense that this was the work I was meant to be doing.

I was lucky enough to stumble on a coaching course (before coaching was even a thing) and after doing my training, I started my business in 2002. I now work as a career, business and personal coach and teach mindfulness and meditation.

Fifteen years later, I still wake up every day to a job that I completely love.

Who I work with

I work with people who are navigating their own way through career, business and life choices and who want to discover, as I did, the path to a meaningful life.

My clients are people who feel like I did back then. Some are in the wrong role, most have an interest in being more creative (even if they haven’t discovered what that means yet) and they care about living meaningful lives. Most are high achievers, many are introverts and some say they suffer from ‘imposter syndrome’.

My coaching style is insightful and practical

I’m a low-key kind of coach. I’ll help you feel motivated but not in a high-fiving ‘ra-ra’ kind of way. My approach is often described by clients as intuitive, insightful and sometimes even spiritual. I believe in bringing all of these concepts together to create practical, workable action steps that will have a genuine impact in your life.

The work I value is in the fields of mindfulness, Positive Psychology, ACT, creativity, authenticity and neuropsychology (some of the authors I love are noted here).

How I help my clients

Mostly, I help people believe in themselves. I believe that everyone is creative and has a unique set of gifts to offer the world. I’m also passionate about teaching people to live more mindfully – it’s from this place that you discover a genuine sense of inner harmony.

In my personal life

Every day, I make time to do something I love (other than work). I meditate daily and exercise often. I walk, do yoga, write, take photos, grow my own herbs, cook for my family and friends and hang out with Chris, my partner of over 30 years and our adult daughters. I love music, travel, good food, reading, learning about anything new and spending time creating a beautiful home.

It’s also important to me to make a difference in a more significant way by contributing my time and a percentage of income to charity.

In the press

I am often invited to speak in the press, on radio, on tv and for business about creativity, balance, meditation, mindfulness and stress. You’ll find some examples of my press here and information about my speaking gigs here.

You can listen to my meditations online

I’m one of the meditation teachers on the incredibly popular Insight Timer meditation app, home to over 1.45 million meditators around the world. You can listen to my meditations there (for free!).

My books

In 2012 I fulfilled a lifelong dream of writing my first book, Believe in Yourself & Do What You Love. Since then, I’ve written two others, Be Mindful & Simplify Your Life and Change How You Think & Be Happier Now (due for release in 2017).

To date, over 50,000 copies of the first two have been sold – way beyond what I’d ever imagined.

My credentials

I have gathered more than 5,000 hours of career, business and personal coaching experience and many hours of meditation teaching over the past 15 years. I was one of the first Australian coaches to achieve PCC accreditation with the International Coach Federation (ICF) in 2005 and one of the early teachers of ‘mainstream’ meditation in Melbourne.
