I’m an author, life, career and business coach, mindfulness teacher and speaker. I started my business, Total Balance in early 2002 and 17 years later, I’m lucky enough to still wake up every day to a business and life that I love.
Who I work with
I work with clients from all walks of life. I’ve helped artists, lawyers, entrepreneurs, CEOs and stay-at-home-mums. Read about some of the qualities of my typical client here.
Clients include The Body Shop, University of Melbourne, Freehills, Middletons, Mallesons, Bolle, IBM, Aviva, Coles Myer, CSIRO, Macquarie Bank, ANZ, Clemenger, Ogilvy, Department of Transport, Department of Sustainability & Environment and Brotherhood of St Laurence (amongst many others).
My coaching style is insightful and practical
I’m a low-key kind of coach. I’ll help you feel motivated but not in a high-fiving ‘ra-ra’ kind of way. My approach is often described by clients as intuitive, practical and sometimes even spiritual. The work I value is in the fields of mindfulness, Positive Psychology, ACT, creativity, authenticity and neuropsychology (some of the authors I love are noted here).
How I help my clients
Mostly, I help people clarify what they want and believe in themselves enough to do what they love. I believe that everyone has a unique set of gifts to offer. I’m also passionate about teaching people to live more mindfully – when you’re grounded and calm, it’s easier to connect with your own version of a purposeful and meaningful life. For details about how I’ve helped other clients have a read of a few case studies here.
In my personal life
Every day, I make time to do something I love (other than work). I meditate daily and exercise often. I walk, do yoga, write, take photos, garden, cook for my family and friends and hang out with Chris, my partner of over 30 years and our adult daughters. I love music, travel, good food, reading, learning and creating a beautiful home.
It’s also important to me to make a difference in a more significant way by contributing my time and a percentage of income to charity.
What I offer
- Coaching: I offer life coaching, career coaching and business coaching as well as intensive half-day discovery sessions.
- Retreats: I run annual retreats for women in Byron Bay and half-day workshops from my home on the Mornington Peninsula.
- Speaking: I run mindfulness workshops and keynotes for organisations.
In the press
I am often invited to speak in the press, on radio, on tv and for business about mindfulness, meditation, career change and managing stress. You’ll find some examples of my press here and information about my speaking gigs here.
You can listen to my meditations online
I teach meditation and mindfulness to corporate and private groups and I’m one of the meditation teachers on the incredibly popular Insight Timer meditation app, home to nearly 7 million meditators around the world. I’m a huge advocate of meditation and have been meditating daily for the past 26 years. You can listen to my meditations on Insight Timer (for free!).
In 2014 I fulfilled a lifelong dream of writing my first book, Believe in Yourself and Do What You Love. Since then, I’ve written Be Mindful and Simplify Your Life, Change How You Think and Be Happier Now and Build Resilience and Free Yourself from Fear. To date, over 120,000 copies have been sold and in 2017, two of my books were listed in the top-ten best-selling personal development books for the year. My latest book is Create Calm – an antidote to anxiety and stress. In late 2019, Believe in Yourself will be released for sale in the US.
I have gathered more than 6,000 hours of career, business and personal coaching experience and many hours of meditation teaching over the past 17 years. I was one of the first Australian coaches to achieve PCC accreditation with the International Coach Federation (ICF) in 2005 and one of the early teachers of ‘mainstream’ meditation in Melbourne. What people say
‘I first met with Kate when I was at a real career crossroads. Kate helped me to nut out my values and aspirations, recognise my natural talents and then identify opportunities and pathways for me to put that all together so that I could actually make stuff happen. I love the way that Kate was able to calmly and pragmatically break things down to the basics. Put simply, working with Kate helped me to get clear – which has been nothing short of life changing.’ Leanne Clancey, Food & Travel Writer
‘I absolutely adore Kate. She is a highly skilled, generous and enormously gifted business coach, especially for those who don’t traditionally consider themselves “business people”. I discovered her through sheer luck (thanks Google), and I remain sincerely grateful for the counsel she offered me back in 2010 when I was first fleshing out the bones for what would become Big Hearted Business. Thanks Kate!’
‘Like many small businesses, our growth was rapid and exciting. Working with Kate as our business coach enabled us to put much-needed systems and processes in place to effectively streamline and manage our business. Kate worked with us to clarify our business focus and the challenges and opportunities that lay ahead. Sometimes I couldn’t see the forest for the trees, but Kate had a knack for giving things clarity and putting things into perspective in a succinct and professional way. Meeting with Kate was always an enjoyable experience and we hope to continue our relationship with her as we take the business to another level.’
Reading Be Mindful & Simplify Your Life was like a meditation. Written in Kate’s signature style, there is no judgement; no exhortations that you MUST do this or that. Rather, it is an invitation to make room for mindfulness in your life backed by generous tips for how to do just that. For anyone who is finding life a bit too overwhelming at the moment, this book will centre you, inspire you and equip you to make room in your life for less ‘doing’ and more ‘being’. Kelly Exeter, Editor of flyingsolo.com.au and author of Your Best Year Ever
Kate’s words in Be Mindful & Simplify Your Life so perfectly capture what every creative entrepreneur needs to hear, all packaged up in a beautiful keepsake to treasure. Her words are authentic, honest and advice the kind I keep referring back to again and again. An absolute must read. Jaclyn Carlson, Blog Society
Be Mindful & Simplify Your Life is a beautiful and very practical book. It will open your heart and your life in unexpected ways. Jono Fisher, Founder of the Wake Up Project and Mindful Leadership Forum
