A few years ago, I wrote an article about how to create a vision for your life and since then, I’ve been asked many times about whether long-term planning is a worthwhile exercise. After starting this process myself over twenty years ago, I can honestly say that it has been one of the most important factors in transforming my life.
I was reminded of this last weekend while tidying my office, when I came across a ten-year-plan that I wrote in 2014. Within it, I had included detail about almost every area of life. And while there were a couple of things I hadn’t achieved, the most important aspects had come to fruition in an uncanny level of detail.
I’ve come to believe that the benefits of setting a long-term plan extend far beyond merely plotting out future events. It’s an exercise that helps you gain clarity about what really matters in your life and it can help you to discover a deeper understanding of what brings you joy. For me, it has become an essential ingredient for leading a fulfilling life.
1. It will help you find focus and direction
One of the most immediate benefits of having a long-term plan is the clarity it brings. So often we find ourselves taking the opportunities that are presented to us without giving much thought as to whether they are really right. Without a clear direction, it’s easy to react to whatever comes your way without a clear sense that this is what you are actively choosing.
A long-term plan acts as a compass, guiding you through the choices you face every day. It helps you prioritise what is truly important, enabling you to focus your time and energy on actions that align with your most important values and goals. Whether you’re planning your career, how you take care of your health or which relationships to put your energy into, having a defined path allows you to make decisions that will move you closer to where you really want to be.
A long-term plan also reduces the anxiety and stress that often accompany decision making. When you have a sense of where you’re heading, it’s easier not to be swayed by temporary setbacks, distractions or the opinions of other people. Instead, you can stay the course, confident in your ability to navigate challenges as they arise with the clarity that you will find your way back to your path.
2. There is joy in the process
While the objectives you include on your long-term plan are important, the process of creating your vision brings its own unique joys. For me it has always been a creative and enjoyable experience. It requires reflection, introspection, creativity and imagination, deepening our understanding of ourselves.
Once you’ve created your plan, you have the opportunity to break down big goals into manageable tasks that you can tackle straight away, providing an immediate sense of enjoyment and accomplishment. Even the smallest steps are a reminder you that you are moving forward, growing, and evolving.
3. Your vision will give you clarity about your true values
A long-term plan isn’t just about setting goals – it’s also about understanding what truly matters to you. When you take the time to plan for the future, you are forced to reflect on your values. While you are writing your plan, think about what kind of person you most want to be, the characteristics you want to espouse and how you want to be remembered.
This self-reflection will help you to identify the values that resonate most with you, which in turn will guide your life choices. Occasionally, you’ll find two values that compete with one another, such as those that I often found difficult to resolve myself – my values of achievement and family.
Over time, I came to acknowledge that I would rather adjust my achievement goals than compromise my relationships with Chris, our girls and our grandchildren. There’s no doubt that my choices impacted some of my business goals but because these decisions lined up with a more important value, I have no regrets whatsoever.
4. Your plan will help you stay motivated and confident
A well-thought-out long-term plan can help you stay motivated, even in the face of adversity. It can also help you to anticipate potential obstacles and prepare for them ahead of time. When we encounter challenges, setbacks, and moments of doubt, a clear vision makes it easier to return your focus to the big picture and push through the difficult times to get back on your path.
The small actions you take create a series of wins that keep you motivated along the way. Each minor victory reinforces your belief in your ability to stay focused, boosting your confidence, commitment and your capacity to persist.
5. It will give your life meaning
Perhaps the most profound benefit of having a long-term plan is the way it helps clarify what gives your life meaning. When you take the time to make a plan, you’re essentially asking yourself, “What do I want my life to stand for?” and this question goes beyond superficial desires to touch on your deeper purpose.
Each step that takes you to towards your vision helps reinforce your belief in yourself and your capacity to actively shape your future. This growing confidence empowers you to take on new challenges and explore new opportunities.
By taking the time to plan for the future, you are crafting a life that is purposeful, fulfilling, and aligned with your deepest desires.
