Something I remember each time I’m running a retreat is how transformative it is to slow down. To rest for half an hour with your feet up. To meditate twice in a day. To make time for a walk or a swim. ⁣They’re not big things but often we don’t prioritise them because they seem less important than the busy things. But they make the world of difference. This week, I encourage you to steal half an hour from a day and do something that feels like you’re genuinely resting.Pretend that you’re on a retreat and switch your phone off, make a cup of tea, put your feet up and do nothing more than savour the luxury of time. 🙏#byronbayretreat
Being in a state of overwhelm makes us less productive and often even frozen. It's when we're most likely to procrastinate (and self-sabotage) and it's usually when we're at our least effective and most stressed.⁣Try the following five tips to get you through a period of overwhelm (I recommend starting with no. 4 😉). 1. Choose just one thing to focus on and put everthing else aside for now. 2. Find one baby step you can take immediately that will take you no longer than five minutes.3. Revisit your long list and look at what you can let go of.4. Walk away from everything for a few hours and do something to rejuvenate yourself.5. Tighten your boundaries and get better at saying no. ✨
If you've ever wondered why you feel things so deeply, why loud environments and people overwhelm you and why watching the news is just too much for you, chances are you are highly sensitive. And while sensitivity is often framed as a negative attribute, it is also a wonderful gift.⁣Dr Elaine Aron has been researching what she calls 'highly sensitive persons' for over thirty years now and her research has found that around 15-20% of people are sensitive and it's a trait that we are born with. When it comes to life's big decisions, most of us have experienced a time when we felt frozen or stuck or flooded with too much information to think clearly.⁣This was how I felt when we first considered moving house after living in one place for 25 years. One day I'd wake up thinking, 'yes, it’s the right thing' and the following morning, I'd be firmly back in the 'no' camp. My husband was exactly the same – neither one of us wanted to get it wrong, particularly for the other.While some days I found it hard to listen to my intuition, once I started looking for small signs, there was synchronicity everywhere.In the end, I made a single phone call – to a real estate agent who had been recommended – and the day he came to visit, we both knew the timing was perfect.What unfolded after that was a series of beautiful little miracles that validated our choice and made me feel that without question, we would end up in the right place. That was over six years ago now and it was the best call we have ever made. If you’re facing a tough decision, I hope these questions here are helpful. Even if you still have some doubts, know that at the right time, the answer will miraculously just become clear. 🌿
I've just had the joy of handing over a new manuscript and I've been reflecting on how lovely it is to finish a project and even more, to realise a dream.⁣I wanted to be a writer for as long as I can remember and while I've had other books published over the past decade, this one feels different to me.A few years ago, I began researching a humble kind of confidence that might appeal to the introverts I work with. I've discovered so much interesting research on this topic.The book won't be released until early next year but I can't wait to share it with you. "Is your legacy that you lived and enjoyed nature, or lived and cared for nature?" Peter Walsh @hobartrivuletplatypus⁣As you've probably gathered, the natural world is everything to me. I'm constantly curious about how I can contribute more to the conservation of the land and habitat around me but if I'm honest, I sometimes find it pretty overwhelming. I want to do all of the things to minimise my impact on the environment but I know that's nowhere near enough. So I keep looking around for inspiration. How are other people proactively making a difference?Last night we discovered how one incredible man is contributing when we watched the beautiful documentary, The Platypus Guardian on ABC iView. It's the story of Peter Walsh and his dedication to protecting Hobart’s urban platypus population and conserving the rivulet they inhabit.Such a great reminder that maybe we can choose just one thing and give all of our energy to that. I'm guessing that Peter had no idea that caring for his beloved platypus would be the start of a community project that's having a real impact in his part of the world.It's a story well worth watching, and I'd also love to hear, have you found a way to make a difference? 🌿
